In 2002 Ypenburg came to The Hague as a result of a municipal reorganization prescribed by the province, at the expense of parts of the municipalities of Rijswijk, Pijnacker and Nootdorp. Together with the neighboring districts of Hoornwijk, Forepark and Leidschenveen, Ypenburg has formed Leidschenveen-Ypenburg since 2002, the eighth district of The Hague.

On May 10, 1940, Ypenburg Airport and its surroundings were the scene of heavy fighting. German airborne troops captured the military airfield as part of a plan to take the residence by surprise. The rapid recapture of the airfield was one of the few Dutch successes during the May days of 1940.
Before the municipal reorganization and during the development of the Ypenburg district, the entire site was examined for archaeological traces. Important finds and discoveries were made in 1998, such as the discovery of a grave field with the burial of 42 individuals, and that there was a row of dunes more inland, which was previously unknown.

The Ypenburg district consists of six neighbourhoods: De Bras, Singels, Waterbuurt, Bosweide, De Venen and Morgenweide. The neighborhood names are partly derived from the former project names as they were devised by the project developer. Many new residents confuse their neighbourhood name with the district name. Since the redistribution of the municipality of The Hague in 2002, the correct division has been as follows: City = The Hague, District = Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Neighbourhood = Ypenburg. Following are the neighborhoods and streets. Project names such as Boswijk and Waterwijk no longer fit in the subdivision, which is why the municipality of The Hague has decided to rename the neighborhoods Bosweide and Waterbuurt respectively.
