Winter in the Netherlands takes place from December to February and can be pretty cold, wet, windy and most of all, unpredictable. Often the weather tends to change several times a day, which is true not only in winter, but basically throughout the whole year in this country.

Ice skating is a typically Dutch activity. During the winter months, canals and lakes in the Netherlands may freeze, especially in northern parts of the country. There are plenty of ice skating opportunities to be found all over the Netherlands. There are also fantastic temporary ice-skating artificial rinks throughout the country. The lead contender for possibly the most beautiful ice-skating rink can be found on Gouda’s Markt square every year from mid-December to mid-January. You can actually skate a full circle around the monumental city hall.
The Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam features a real winter wonderland including a lovely ice-skating rink from mid-November to mid-January. Fairy lights in the trees, snow, and plenty of Christmas stalls with delicious winter bites. From the end of November to early January, you can go ice-skating on the covered ice-skating rink on Markt square in Groningen, rain or shine. For those who prefer to slide around the ice instead, curling is an option. Surrounded by a winter landscape on Het Vrijthof square in Maastricht there is a skating rink. It is possible to rent ice skates and warm up afterwards with a beverage and a bite at one of the inviting stalls or cafés. The real feeling of ice skating through a quintessentially Dutch polder landscape can be experienced at Flevonice, even when temperatures do not drop below zero. From early December through the end of February, there is a 2.5 km ice-skating track which leads you through the meadows.

Each year in December, the Dickens Festival is held in Deventer in the Overijssel province. The festival celebrates the famous author Charles Dickens and takes place in the town’s historical Bergkwartier. More than 700 characters from his beloved books come to life, including Scrooge, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Fagin. There are plenty of Christmas Carol Singers, orphan children and drunkards to add life to the festivities.

The Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) is a long-distance tour skating event on natural ice, almost 200 kilometres (120 mi) long, which is held both as a speed skating competition (with 300 contestants) and a leisure tour (with 16,000 skaters). It is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, leading past all eleven historical cities of the province. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least 15 centimetres (6 in) thick; sometimes on consecutive years, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years or more. When the ice is suitable, the tour is announced and starts within 48 hours.
