From 1836 water towers have been a characteristic part of the Dutch landscape. Since then, more than 260 water towers have been built to provide the central drinking water supply. In 2021 there were just under 175 water towers in the Netherlands, of which about 35 were still in use. No more has been built in the Netherlands since 1970 (Eindhoven got the last).

Running water was a sign of prosperity and was extremely important for improving public health. For that reason, but also because the high water towers stood out enormously in the flat landscape, much attention was paid to the appearance of the towers. This has resulted in a unique collection of water towers. There are no two Dutch water towers that are quite the same.

The water towers are not only essential for the drinking water supply, but often also for the irrigation of horticulture. Water towers are targets in many wars, partly because they can serve as a lookout. At the end of the Second World War, for example, many Dutch water towers were blown up or damaged by the retreating German troops. Including many towers in North Brabant, such as those in Steenbergen. But water towers in Domburg, Nieuwkuijk and Zandvoort also came under fire.
