On 13 June 1907, the Rotterdam city council took the decision to construct the Waalhaven and to expropriate the Robbenoord and Plompert polder. The polder was abolished in 1913. In 1907 the first excavations were started. The first excavated soil was salvaged in the southern part of the Robbenoord and Plompert polders, the later Waalhaven airport and the current Waalhaven-Zuid business park. Subsequently, the released soil was used for the construction of the Kralingse Bos.

In 1919 it was decided to build an airport south of the Waalhaven. From this airport – which was given the appropriate name of Waalhaven Airport – an air freight service was set up with England. On July 26, 1920 the first plane landed from London. In the May days of 1940, the airport was raided by German paratroopers and the Dutch defense rolled up. The airport was attacked by Dutch and British bombers, whereby 60 tons of bombs were dropped on and around the field. Dutch artillery also shot at the landing sites for days. After the May days, the airport was used by the Germans for a short time, but they found it impractical because it was too close to the coast. The Germans would eventually make the site unsuitable for landing. After World War 2 it was soon included in the port industry. There is no trace of the airport anymore.

On the West side of Waalhaven, next to the sheds of the Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij (Dry Dock Company), was the village of Heijplaat, built to accommodate employees of the yard. The village had 315 single-family homes, and later 40 more were added.
Until the 1990s, the Waalhaven served as a transhipment port for, in particular, bulk goods and containers. At the time, it was a transfer place for Lash ships. The bins were mainly used for storage. There are many well-known shipping companies based at the Waalhaven. One can also find Smit Internationale, who moors his cradles and harbor tugs. On the south side of the Waalhaven, berths for inland navigation have made way for a business park, where the port and / or water-related companies, such as Deltalinqs, have had their offices erected on the reclaimed land. The tour boat from, among others, the Spido also calls at the Waalhaven.
