Tourism in Kleve, Germany

By far the most important economic factor in Kleve was international tourism from about 1650 until the devastation of the Second World War. Kleve already knew the beautiful landscape parks and as an old ducal city had a beautiful architecture with city walls. After the mineral water spring in the Springenberg was discovered in 1741, Kleve quickly grew into one of the most important northern European spas, as “Bad Cleve”.

The spa hotel (Kurhaus), built at the foot of the Springenberg, was just one of nearly 100 hotels at one point. The most famous of these were Hotel Stirum, Hotel Maywald, Hotel Hof van Holland, Hotel Prinzenhof and Hotel Robbers. In that golden period, many Dutch wealthy and industrialists also had spacious country houses built in Cleves, in particular on the Tiergartenstraße, which connected the Neue Garten with the historic city and there connected to the Kavariner Tor.

After the German Kaiser Wilhelm imposed hefty import taxes on (too) competitive Dutch foods at the end of the 19th century, dairy manufacturer Simon van den Bergh (1819-1907) from Oss and cocoa manufacturer Bensdorp from Amsterdam established a production location in Kleve. In addition, the German biscuit manufacturer XOX established a new factory in Kleve. An extensive shoe industry also developed autonomously in Kleve, the most important of which was the children’s shoe brand Elefanten, created by Gustav Hoffmann. However, all these factories were closed in the period 1975-2005, but the special success of Van den Bergh in Kleve formed the basis for the possible merger of Margarineunie with the English Lever Brothers, which resulted in Unilever in 1928. The sizeable food industry in Kleve was also an important factor in the emergence of machine building and packaging companies. Karl Kisters, who later became a great honorary citizen of Kleve, founded KHS as a former engineer at Elefanten. Other flourishing niche players such as MKS, Colt, Ipsen and Spectro also emerged in this sector.

The Klever Schwanenburg was first mentioned in 1020 in the Klosterrath annals. It can be seen from afar and offers a wonderful view of Kleverland from the swan tower. After 1945 the B. C. Koekkoek Haus served as the town hall for several years and from 1960 as a municipal museum. In 1997 it was able to be returned to its original state (an artist’s house). At the same time, a museum was set up that largely deals with the work of B.C. Koekkoek, his extensive family, his students and contemporaries
The Stiftskirche (church) is a provost church and the parish church of Kleve. The church has the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Lohengrin Fountain (Elsabrunnen) is surrounded by a magical story. It is about the origin of the first Klever. The history books are divided and it cannot be proven one hundred percent. However, the origins of the Klever date back, with relative certainty, to the time of a certain Princess Beatrix. The fountain is a work by Prof. Karl-Hennig Seemann.
