Gelderland is the largest province in the Netherlands, the province is subdivided into the regions of De Veluwe, De Betuwe and De Achterhoek. All three regions have unique natural features. For a night out, the province has small and large theaters.

The theaters in Gelderland offer an extensive program of performances, from cabaret to spectacular shows. Fans of a musical performance or a classical concert can also visit these theaters. In Apeldoorn is Theater Orpheus which was opened on March 12, 1965 and was already known at that time for its own character. The theater has a spacious foyer and a large hall, which was experienced as special for a theater in the 1960s. Orpheus is one of the five largest theaters in the Netherlands.
Schouwburg Amphion in Doetinchem opened its doors in 1968. The theater, then located on the Schouwburgplein, was an enrichment for cultural Doetinchem. In September 2010 the new theater was opened by Dutch Queen Beatrix. Schouwburg Amphion is the largest theater in the Achterhoek and the fourth largest theater in the province of Gelderland. In 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2019 it was named the Best Theater in the Netherlands

Stadstheater Arnhem was the first theater in the Netherlands to add a newly built small auditorium (flat floor) to the traditional frame theater (in 1978). This to make room for the new theater forms that developed in the 1970s. As a result, the theater workshop InDependance was founded in 1985 by the then theater management. This theater workshop has been housed in Theater aan de Rijn since August 2001 under the name of ‘Theaterwerkplaats Nieuwe Oost’. Theater de Molen started in 2000 with an enthusiastic group of volunteers in ‘t Molenhuis in Beuningen. This theater programs surprising performances for young and old, including cabaret, music and various family performances.
The very first theater in Tiel was located in the Sint Agnieten Chapel. In 1883 this building was closed by order of the fire brigade. In 1887, the Spaarbank building was opened on the corner of Kerkstraat and Sint Agnietenstraat. During the Second World War, the theater was completely destroyed in 1945. A brand new theater was opened in 1969 on the same site as the old Spaarbank building: the Agnietenhof.
