First held in 1984 as an offshoot of the carnival in the Caribbean. The Summer Carnival Street Parade in Rotterdam, The Netherlands has remained true to its Caribbean roots, bringing a spirit of diversity to Rotterdam. When the Rotterdam Summer Carnival first started, around 1.500 people attended the Caribbean festival. Today it attracts hundreds of thousands visitors to Rotterdam, and continues to grow in popularity.

The Rotterdam Summer Carnival celebrated it’s 30th anniversary in 2014. Due to extreme weather conditions, the Summer Carnival street parade was canceled in 2015. That meant, more than 2.500 dancers, 25 carnival groups and 30 floats could not wait to mash up the streets of Rotterdam city in 2016.
