A snack bar in the Netherlands is an eatery where people can mainly buy and consume snacks (for example fries, croquettes, frikandellen). A snack bar where the menu is a bit more extensive and some seats are available is also called a cafeteria, although that word is mainly used to indicate the place in an office or company where employees can buy a drink or a snack, or their packed lunch. can use, whereby the range is less extensive than a full-fledged company restaurant. In Belgium and in the southern parts of the Netherlands, a snack bar is also called a frietkot (chip shop).

The oldest known cafeteria in the Netherlands was located in Utrecht in 1915 in the street Achter Clarenburg. The first automatic system was introduced at Utrecht Central Station in 1932. A stronger decrease than the national average occurred in Amsterdam, where the number of snack bars decreased from 263 in 2007 to 212 in 2017, or a decrease of 19.4%. In 2017, most snack bars were located in the province of Limburg, namely 4.7 per 10,000 inhabitants, with the highest snack bar density in the towns of Venlo, Heerlen and Sittard-Geleen.

There is also an annual review by Frietopia, a consumer site that visits and reviews chip shops and cafeterias. The three best businesses of the year receive the Frietopia Audience Award.
