Slikkerveer is separated from the nearest Ridderkerk village Bolnes in the northwest by the Donckse Bos, in which the still inhabited 18th-century Huys ten Donck is a noteworthy cultural monument. The largest shopping square in Slikkerveer is Dillenburgplein.

In the 19th and 20th century there were several shipyards along the rivers; Boele Bolnes, Schram, IHC Gusto, and de Groot & van Vliet. The Smit Slikkerveer generator plant was also established (later Holec Ridderkerk and Brush and Alstom). The vast majority of male residents worked at one of these companies. Many yards closed their gates at the end of the 20th century. At these most shipyard locations are now residential areas or other industrial sites.
