The Voorwegschool in Heemstede is the oldest elementary school in the Netherlands. Until 1630, education in the Netherlands was mainly provided by the church. Usually gave a cleric lesson. The actual founder of the school, Adriaan Pauw, is buried in the church next to the school.

In 1620 Adriaan Pauw had bought the House in Heemstede and had thus become master of Heemstede, including Bennebroek. Thanks to his involvement, the Reformed Church on Kerkplein (later Wilhelminaplein) was opened in the summer of 1625. Adriaan Pauw then ordered the construction of the first school on Voorweg, next to the church. The school consisted of one classroom and a residence for the master. Pauw paid for the construction of the church and school by taxing beer and by levying property taxes on the sale of plots of land.

O.B.S. Piet Hein is not only by far the oldest school in Amstelveen, but also one of the oldest schools in the Netherlands. It is suspected that the school already existed before the later namesake Piet Hein was born in 1578. Little is known about those very early years, but it is a fact that the predecessor of the current school was located next to the church in the old village of Amstelveen for about three hundred years. The last version of that “school house” that was in use between 1907 and 1949 can still be recognized by the inscription O(penbare) L(agere) school.

The Amsterdam Lyceum is the oldest lyceum in the Netherlands. The school was founded in 1917 by Dr. C.P. Gunning (1886-1960), a fervent proponent of the then new school type “lyceum”, in which gymnasium and hbs were united. Gunning remained in office as the first rector until 1952. His humanistic vision of life explains the choice for the general special foundation of our school.
