The St. Maartenskerk (St. Martin’s Church) is named after St. Martin, the Hungarian nobleman (born ± 316), who later became bishop. The name of the Sint Maartenskerk is first found in an old charter from the year 1317. The church then appears to be a parish church, the collation right – the right to appoint the church officials – belonged to the chapter of the former main church of Tiel, the St. Walburg Church. This St. Walburg’s Church was demolished in 1679. After that, the St. Martin’s Church was given the function of main church.
The Dominicuskerk (Dominic Church) is a Roman Catholic church. The church is located on the St. Walburgkerkpad in the center of Tiel and was built in 1939-1940. The church stands on the site where the former church from 1861, also called Saint Dominic, was destroyed by fire on July 8, 1938.
The medieval Sint Caeciliakapel (Saint Caecilia Chapel) is a national monument and belonged to the monastery of the same name, of which unfortunately nothing remains. This is a late Gothic single-aisled chapel. The chapel was also virtually destroyed in the Second World War, but restored in 1949 by a preservation order. The chapel is now used by the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation.

Jews have already lived in Tiel in the Middle Ages. Towards the end of the 16th century, the town’s Jewish residents disappeared as a result of an ordinance from the Spanish governor. In the course of the eighteenth century a number of Jewish families arrived in Tiel. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the Jewish community of Tiel grew rapidly, in keeping with the economic development of the city. From the beginning of the twentieth century, the Jewish community shrank.
At the beginning of the Second World War, Tiel had a medium-sized Jewish community. About half of the Jewish population was deported and murdered during the war. The others managed to go into hiding. The synagogue was destroyed by the Germans and was used as a warehouse during the war years. Most of the Torah scrolls have been preserved and given to the Jewish community of Arnhem after the war. The synagogue building was sold after the war and became a mosque in 1976.
