In 2015, approximately 50 percent of adult Dutch people indicated that they were religious. In 2010, this was still 55 percent. Of all religious denominations, Reformed Church members are the most loyal churchgoers. Also in 2016, half of the population in the Drechtsteden was religious. Exceptions were the municipalities of Sliedrecht and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, where 62 percent and 58.5 percent respectively adhered to a religious denomination or a philosophical group.

In Sliedrecht, the followers of the Dutch Reformed Church (NH) scored the highest (20.7 percent of the population). In Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, the majority (16.7 percent) were members of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PKN). This was evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) for the whole of the Netherlands. Church attendance in Dordrecht was the lowest. Not even one in five Dordrecht residents achieved an average of at least once a month. In Zwijndrecht and Papendrecht there were slightly higher numbers. The top church attendances in the Drechtsteden were Sliedrecht (40.7 percent attended church at least once a month), Alblasserdam (38.4 percent) and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht (35.3 percent).

Just under a quarter of Dutch churchgoers were Roman Catholic in 2015. In the Drechtsteden that was much less: in Dordrecht 10.1 percent, in Papendrecht and in Zwijndrecht 8.8 percent. In Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht even less, namely 6.3 percent. At the bottom were Sliedrecht (3.4 percent) and Alblasserdam (3 percent Roman Catholics). The Islamic (Muslim) following was greater as the city grew larger. In Dordrecht almost 10 percent were followers of Islam. In Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht there were the fewest Muslims (2.2 percent).
