Poet Laureate (Dichter des Vaderlands) is a title in the Netherlands that was first awarded on January 27, 2000. It is an initiative of NRC Handelsblad, NPS and the Poetry International foundation. The idea is inspired by the Poet Laureate that has existed in England for centuries.

The first bearer of this title was the poet Gerrit Komrij. It is true that Rutger Kopland received the most votes from the poetry readers, but he thanked for the honor because of the much work that this would entail. Number two, Komrij, subsequently became the official first Poet Laureate. In addition to a Poet Laureate, the Netherlands also has a large number of city poets.

In general, poets are writers who see the poem as their most important creative product. There is no really conclusive definition, because there is no such thing as a ‘professional group of poets’. Sometimes the distinction is made between ‘real’ poets and Sunday poets, but that too is arbitrary. Many of the poets who were later acclaimed, such as Hugo Claus, published their collections of poetry independently as novice poets. So what makes someone a poet is not directly related to success or publication in a well-known magazine.
