PLUS (Supermarket In The Netherlands)

In 1926, soap powder manufacturer Pleines in Den Dolder, the Netherlands only wanted to supply its product ‘De Duif’ (= The Pigeon) to wholesalers. The cooperating purchasing associations then went in search of a solution to the shortage of soap powder: their own purchasing association. On 14 March 1928, the cooperatives founded the ‘Coöperatieve Bond van Kruideniers Inkoopvereniging Het Nederlands Sperwerverbond’. An association with its own house brand ‘Sperwer’ (= Sparrowhawk), independent of the soap powder manufacturer. Sperwer was not chosen by chance at the time: it is a bird of prey that often targets pigeons.

Since 1928, Sperwer has been the name of the stores. In the years that followed, more store owners joined and the organization grew. In the sixties of the previous century, the store name Sperwer was gradually replaced by 4 = 6. In 1987, it became Plusmarkt and since 2001 it has been PLUS.

At the end of 2021, PLUS and Coop decided to merge in order to achieve an even stronger market position. The establishment of the new combined cooperative PLUS U.A. was a fact on 3 January 2022.
