Papendrecht is first mentioned in a document from 1105. After 1277, when a dike was built around the inn, a village emerged. Until 1816, Papendrecht was the property of noble families and only then did it get its own municipal government. The municipality only really started to grow in the 1960s. The dike village now has an urban character.

Papendrecht is a typical dike village: the original inhabitants of the area settled along the Merwede river. Not only were rivers important for transportation, the fish in the river also formed an important part of the meal and income of local residents. The location on the river is also favorable for trade and work (shipyards and on the buntings, alluvial land, reed cultivation).

There has been a ferry to Dordrecht for a long time. After the construction of the bridge between Dordrecht and Papendrecht, the ferry continued as a pedestrian ferry for several years. This connection was later included in the waterbus sailing plan to, among others, Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Sliedrecht. The municipal coat of arms contains three mills: a trass mill, a corn mill and a polder mill. The three mills depicted are no longer there, but a (reduced) meadow mill has stood in the Noord Hoekse Wiel Park since 1980 as a reminder of that time. The mill has been restored and is often used again by millers.
