National Parks in the Netherlands

The Netherlands packs great natural diversity into quite a small space, and national parks have been cropping up around the country since the 1930s. In Limburg there are forested hills, while in North Brabant there is a Sahara-like desert. The climate of the Wadden Sea World Heritage is completely different. Seals and porpoises live here and there are dune-lined beaches.

Twenty-one areas in the Netherlands have been designated as national parks. In total, this concerns about 3% of the Dutch land area (2021). The areas are partly owned by the state and are then managed by Staatsbosbeheer, but the largest part of the land within the national parks is in the hands of private owners, often large nature conservation organizations such as the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. These three parks were very different from the American predecessors in many ways. It was not about large areas of untouched nature and production was not taboo: a lot of wood was cut in the Veluwe parks.

Although the call for parks established by the Dutch state increased, partly stimulated by the increase in nationalism, a greater role for the state in social life and numerous park initiatives in Europe (Switzerland, Italy, Spain and others), the national government virtually no role. Because the Netherlands had committed itself in 1933 through an international treaty to proceed to the establishment of national parks, it focused on the Dutch East Indies. Although large reserves have been established there, it did not come from national parks under Dutch rule.
