Locks in The Netherlands

A lock is the best-known version of a sluice. It is a structure that makes it possible to bring ships from one water level area to another. A ship can be locked up or locked down with it, respectively up or down. Passage through locks is regulated, for example by means of lights that are installed at the lock. A lock consists of a lock chamber or lock chamber with a lock gate on both sides. The dimensions of the chamber determine the CEMT class of a waterway.

A lock is needed to lock ships from a canal section with a higher or lower water level. The lock usually consists of two sets of lock gates, which are usually not opened simultaneously. This is only possible if the water level on both sides is almost the same. In that case, the gates can be opened temporarily on both sides, which means that ships that are longer than the lock chamber can still be locked. An example of a lock where this is regularly necessary is the Waaiersluis in Gouda.

The best-known rotating doors are the mitre doors. These are double doors that are placed in a V-shape against each other, so that the doors are kept closed by the water pressure. It is then impossible to open the doors if the water level on both sides is not the same. On tidal water, it can happen that the water drops slightly lower than the water in the lock chamber has been taken into account. To prevent the doors from opening unintentionally, a bolt is used on the doors to keep them connected and closed. Examples of such constructions can be found on the Helsluis and the Ottersluis. The mitre doors on the smaller lock doors are made of tropical hardwood. Long-term tests are being conducted with plastic doors. For example, the Spieringsluis has been special since spring 2000, because the wooden lock doors were replaced by doors made of fibre-reinforced plastic. In 2010, the first lock in the world with lock doors made of concrete was put into use in Amsterdam IJburg. These doors slide open and closed on a water film. Larger doors are usually steel constructions.

A footbridge is often fitted over the doors to operate the crank of the paddles. If the doors are closed, one can also walk to the other side of the lock to do this. It is not always and everywhere permitted to use this footbridge for pedestrian traffic. A very old type is the fan door. The locks of the Hollandse Waterlinie are equipped with fan doors. Fan doors are doors in the shape of a quadrant, where the centre of the circle forms the pivot point and the two connected doors follow the radius. The cylindrical side is the side against which the water is located. These doors can be opened against the pressure of the water, because the water presses on both doors. The Waaiersluis in the Hollandse IJssel can lock at high and low tide.

At some locks the drop can be so small that the high and low tide levels can sometimes be reversed. In these locks, the doors, if they are point doors, are double (so four pairs of doors). An example of such locks are the Houtrib locks near Lelystad in the Amsterdam, Lemmer waterway. An example in Belgium of such a tidal lock is the Nieuwpoort lock in Veurne on the Nieuwpoort-Dunkirk canal and the Zennegat lock on the Leuven-Dijle canal, which is also a sea lock.
