Until the last ten years of the twentieth century, the North Island in Rotterdam was characterized by a lot of activity. On the Maaskade, on the north side of the island, as well as on the Prins Hendrikkade on the south side, the inland vessels were sometimes five to six rows wide.

The island was inhabited by a large population of skippers. The middle class did add to that. In the early 1990s, the island had four grocers, a shoemaker, four butchers, two drugstores, two bakers, a post office with an ATM and a bank with an ATM. The last two were discontinued in the late 1990s, one baker survived, the shoemaker disappeared, as did all butchers. Plusmarkt Van Dijk, which originated from Groenteboer Van Dijk of the Burgemeester Hoffmannplein, ended in 2003. The retail space was leased by SPAR Matze. In the late 1990s an ALDI had established itself on the Maaskade.
