Hoogvliet (Supermarket Chain In The Netherlands)

Hoogvliet is a supermarket chain that was founded in 1968 on the Mariëndijk in Kwintsheul by Leen Hoogvliet. Until then, the Hoogvliet family, led by father Joris Hoogvliet, ran a small chain of greengrocers in The Hague and the surrounding area. In 2018, the company has branches in North Holland, South Holland, Utrecht and Gelderland and the gross annual turnover is approximately 930 million euros.

In 1968 the first self-service store was opened, which then bore the name Cash & Carry. However, this name was also used by other retailers. Leen Hoogvliet therefore decided in 1974 to give the company the name Hoogvliet. In 2003 Hoogvliet opened a branch in the Hoogvliet district of Rotterdam of the same name. One of the largest branches is located in Woudenberg. In 2009 the company had installed self-scan checkouts in more than half of its stores.

In 2011, Hoogvliet bought land in Bleiswijk, on the Prisma business park on the Zoetermeer side of the A12, for the construction of a new distribution center. Due to a conflict with the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, the company would leave there. Hoogvliets bakery was opened on this site in Bleiswijk in 2016 and construction of the other buildings was started in 2017. The last activities moved to the new distribution center in 2021.

Since the end of 2013, groceries can also be ordered in the Hoogvliet web shop. The customer must then collect them from the store. Since the end of 2017, the groceries have been delivered to home in various places in South Holland, although the areas are still being expanded. Hoogvliet carries both its own private label and the “g’woon” brand of purchasing combination Superunie.
