In 2020 the Dutch fish industry generated a total revenue of around 4 billion euro and about 6200 fulltime jobs. This concerns approximately 300 companies in the country. The Netherlands and fish are intrinsically linked. The trade in fish has its roots in the Middle Ages when it became the cornerstone for the Dutch wealth.

The Dutch fish industry is mainly located in places like Urk, IJmuiden and the Den Haag (The Hague) /Scheveningen/Katwijk region for fish processing and trade. The crustacean industry is mainly concentrated around Yerseke (Zeeland province). A number of companies are located in the area of the Port of Rotterdam and Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport). Approximately half of the processing takes place on the premises of the company. A quarter takes places at (affiliated) Dutch companies. The remainder of the processing activities are done abroad.
In 2020 the Dutch fishing fleet is regarded as being one of the most modern in the world. The cutterfleet consists of about 400 cutters and fishes mainly on plaice and sole. A number of smaller cutters fish for shrimp and the inland fishermen fish for sweet water species. The Netherlands has, in addition to the cutterfleet, 17 freezetrawlers and almost 80 musselships. The whole industry is making an ongoing effort to innovate which helps in making it more sustainable and keeps the fish stocks healthy.

In 2020 the Netherlands had 815 stores that specialize in fish sales. Relatively speaking, Zeeland has the most specialist fish shops as this province had one fish shop for every 11,000 inhabitants. Since 2007, the number of fish businesses in the country has increased from 650 to 815. As a sea nation, the Netherlands has traditionally been a country that fishes a lot. The number of fish shops was particularly high in Noord-Holland, surrounded by water. A quarter of the total of 815 specialist fish shops were located in this province.
