Emmen is a municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. It is a prime example of a planned city, Emmen arose from several small farming and peat-harvesting communities which have dotted the province of Drenthe since the Middle Ages. Traces of these communities can still be seen in the form of the villages of Westenesch, Noordbarge and Zuidbarge: they have a separate history and layout, but are surrounded by the suburbs and the centre of Emmen.

Emmen originated on the southeast of the Hondsrug and was originally an esdorp (Angerdorf). The (partly) still present ash and brink bear witness to this. In a charter by bishop Andries van Cuijk from 1139, there is mention of a court in Emne. It is the oldest mention of Emmen, for which both the names Emne and Empne were used.

The meaning of Emmen is perhaps the plain, the low land, but this is not entirely certain. The charter refers to a farm or a court, for which different names were used: Hoofdhof, Saalhof, Noble Hof and Heerenhof. However, there is no certainty as to whether the same farm is always meant. Emmen’s nickname is Vlinderstad (Butterfly City), as an indirect reference to the former (Noorder) Dierenpark Emmen, which was succeeded in March 2016 by Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen.
