Dredging Industry in the Netherlands

Dutch dredging companies enjoy world fame. The Netherlands previously had hundreds of dredging companies that operated internationally. Certainly the two largest dredging companies Van Oord and Boskalis are leading in the dredging culture of the Netherlands and are also active across national borders. First of all, the perpetual battle of the Dutch against water made them experts in the field of water management. If it were not the raging sea that had to be kept out, then it was the canals and canals that had to be excavated or diverted. It is not without reason that the Dutch language has developed so many words for the concept of ‘water’ over the centuries.

As early as 1898, the Dutch caused an international sensation with the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg, led by engineer Pieter Caland. The draining of the Zuiderzee, which started in 1918, and the construction of the Delta Works between 1953 and 1997 strengthened the reputation of Dutch hydraulic engineers. They worked on projects worldwide. From maintaining oil platforms off the coast of Brazil to building the port of Taiwan. From gas extraction in Siberia to the installation of oil pipelines in South Africa.

The dredgers kept their eyes on the future. A necessary condition for economic growth. Van Oord and Boskalis are expanding their activities in the field of land reclamation and the construction of coastal roads. The installation of dams, sewers and oil pipelines were also part of the Dutch’s duties. The same applied to the construction of offshore wind projects; realizing offshore wind farms. In 2000, Dutch dredging companies supplied the 57 meter wide and 10 meter thick steel doors of the new locks of the Panama Canal.

Dutch hydraulic engineering attracted the attention of wealthy emirs in the Middle East in the 2000s. They paid the Dutch billions of euros to reclaim the Palm Islands, artificially designed peninsulas off the coast of Dubai. Since then, the sheikhs have continued to employ the dredgers to complete notable projects such as The World, Deira Islands, Island 2 and Bluewaters Island.
Later there was a downward trend in the turnover of Dutch dredgers. Van Oord and Boskalis still achieved an annual turnover of around 2 billion euros, but they had to beware of competition from China. The country keeps its borders closed to foreign dredging companies and the Chinese themselves spread their wings to Africa. The Belgian dredging companies also became increasingly important.
