Drechtsteden refers to a region in the Dutch province of South Holland, whose place names often end in -drecht. These are the places Alblasserdam, Dordrecht, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Papendrecht, Sliedrecht, and Zwijndrecht, located on the three rivers Beneden-Merwede, the Noord and the Oude Maas. The area concerns the southern part of the Randstad.

The Drechtsteden together have almost 270,000 inhabitants (2024) and cover an area of 169 km², of which 1,450 hectares are industrial estates. The population density of the area is 1598 inhabitants per km² (2024). Water is the connecting factor: the three rivers Beneden-Merwede, the Noord and the Oude Maas come together in the heart of the region at the three-river point. The region is a leader in the maritime sector, the Drechtsteden are therefore ‘Together City on the Water’ and ‘Maritime Top Region’.

The general board, the Drechtraad, consists of councilors from the seven municipalities. Each faction in the seven municipal councils has one representative in the Drecht Council. Each member has its own ‘voting weight’. The weight of his or her vote in the Drecht Council depends on the number of votes obtained for his or her political party in the local municipal elections. The Drechtraad thus has a direct connection with the elected municipal councils. The number of members therefore depends on the number of factions in the municipal councils; In the 2014-2018 administrative period there are 45 Drecht council members. It is the only communal arrangement in the Netherlands where council members have primacy and which is, as it were, ‘supported’ by the residents, which makes it unique in the administrative Netherlands. The daily management is in the hands of the Drechtsteden council, which consists of eight directors.
